Broccoli Recipes

The Colorful Broccoli Story

Violet broccoli is a new twist on an old favorite. It gets its marvelous color straight from traditionally bred, heirloom style seeds. The purple color comes from a plant pigment called anthocyanins, part of a family of health friendly molecules called flavinoids.

Broccoli is, believe it or not, part of the cabbage family. The name comes from The plural form of the Italian word "broccolo", the flowering top of the cabbage plant. It was first cultivated in Europe about 2,000 years ago, and was brought to the United States by Italian immigrants

Violet Broccoli Nutrition Facts

Studies suggest that a diet rich in brightly colored fruits and vegetables can have important health benefits.

Only one cup of raw broccoli florets provides you with 43% of the USDA daily value of vitamin A, and 110% of the daily value of vitamin C. Broccoli also provides you with important antioxidant compounds that promote a healthy immune system, and a healthy heart.

Violet broccoli has all of the nutrition of traditional green broccoli, PLUS purple pigments called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are flavinoids that may help increase the antioxidant capacity of the blood and may help maintain good brain function. The tissues of all higher plants contain anthocyanins, which is one more reason why fruits and vegetables are an important part of a good diet.
